What More Can Be Done?

Issues

While San Marcos and Texas State are definitely great in terms of sustainability, there are always things that can be improved. Some main issues I personally think should be addressed include the public transportation and more knowledge on recycling on campus. The public transport here at Texas State is great if you are going to class and back home, but not for much else. If the bus system expanded to reach the entire city, I believe more people (especially freshmen) would use it.

Recycling on campus is also something I would address. There are tons of recycling cans, but little knowledge on what can or can't be recycled. I can't tell you the number of times I've been with friends and they have asked whether a specific type of plastic is recyclable. (and I don't know either!) It would be helpful if TXST put signs on recycling bins indicating what can or cannot be recycled.

Outside of TXST, there is a lot that can be done to have a more sustainable city. Most importantly, our sidewalks are not as good as they should be. They randomly cut off or are in hard to reach areas. There are also a lack of cross walks which makes it difficult for pedestrians to safely walk around town.

Improvements

Despite the issues, San Marcos has made major improvements. Two of the most recent ones include the implementation of bike lanes downtown and the can ban at the river. There is construction downtown to better service bike-riders and disabled individuals. This is something that will help people get out of cars and onto more sustainable modes of transportation like bikes. At the river, they have recently implemented a can ban, which bans the use of all single-use cans along the river. This will help to keep the river clean and support the local wildlife.
